A hundred dollars buys a great deal more keyboard than it did a few years ago. Hot-swap sockets, a gasket mount, a per-board wireless chip and double-shot PBT keycaps all started as enthusiast features at three times this price, and all of them now turn up below it. What has not changed is that a cheap board makes its compromises somewhere, and the useful question is which corner a given one cut.
The usual answers are the plate and the case. A board at this price is far more likely to be ABS plastic than aluminium, and the plate is more often FR4 or POM than brass, which is a sound and stiffness decision more than a quality one. Stabilizers are the other common corner: factory-lubed on some, dry and rattling on others, and that single difference does more to the sound of a board than the case material does.
Prices below are the ones published at the last check, in US dollars, before shipping and before tax. A board whose maker publishes no price is not listed here at all rather than estimated, which is why this page is shorter than the full index.
