North-Facing vs South-Facing LEDs: Which Is Better?

Learn how north-facing and south-facing keyboard LEDs affect shine-through legends, Cherry-profile keycap compatibility and your next keyboard.

The words north-facing and south-facing describe where a keyboard’s LED sits relative to each switch. That sounds like a small detail, but it can affect how evenly backlit legends glow and whether certain Cherry-profile keycaps clear the switch housing.

Neither orientation makes a keyboard inherently faster or better built. The useful question is which one works with the keycaps and lighting you want.

What north-facing and south-facing mean

Imagine looking straight down at a keyboard in its normal typing orientation, with the function row away from you and the spacebar closest to you.

These labels describe LED placement, not the direction the keyboard faces on your desk. On many boards the switch housing is also oriented to accommodate the LED position.

To identify yours, remove a keycap carefully and inspect the switch and the light source around it. A product’s PCB photographs or specifications may also state the orientation. Not every keyboard has individually addressable RGB LEDs, and some designs place or diffuse lighting differently.

North-facing vs south-facing at a glance

These are tendencies, not universal guarantees. LED brightness, housing transparency, keycap legends, switch design and diffuser construction all matter.

Why LED orientation matters for shine-through keycaps

Many backlit keycaps place their translucent legends near the top edge of each cap. A north-facing LED is typically closer to that legend position and can light it more directly.

With south-facing LEDs, top-positioned legends can look dimmer or less even. That does not mean south-facing boards have weak RGB. A translucent switch housing, clear keycaps, side-printed legends or a different light-pipe design can change the result.

If readable illuminated legends are a priority, look for photographs of the specific keyboard and keycap combination in a dark room rather than relying on orientation alone.

Cherry-profile keycap interference explained

Cherry-profile keycaps are relatively low and sculpted. On some north-facing switch configurations, the underside of a Cherry-profile keycap can contact the switch’s upper housing before the switch completes its intended travel.

This is often called north-facing interference. It can change the feel or sound of bottom-out on affected rows, depending on the keycap and switch.

The issue is not caused by the LED light itself. It comes from the geometry of the keycap underside and the switch housing when installed in a particular orientation.

It is not universal. Some switches are designed with housing clearances that avoid the problem, and keycap dimensions vary. South-facing mounting generally avoids this particular interference geometry, but you should still check the actual switch and keycap combination.

Our keycaps guide covers profile and fit, while switch anatomy explains the housing parts involved.

Does LED orientation change keyboard performance?

Not inherently. North-facing and south-facing are lighting and physical-layout choices. They do not specify a keyboard’s scan rate, debounce behaviour, polling rate or end-to-end input latency.

For gaming, prioritise verified keyboard performance and a comfortable layout rather than treating LED direction as a speed specification.

How to check your keyboard before buying keycaps

  1. Identify the LED position. Check the manufacturer’s PCB photos or remove one keycap and look at the switch from above.
  2. Check the keycap profile. Cherry-profile sets are the main reason people ask about north-facing interference. Other profiles have different underside shapes.
  3. Check switch compatibility. Look for documented clearance with the exact switch and keycap combination. Do not assume every north-facing board interferes.
  4. Check legend placement. Top-positioned shine-through legends may be better lit by north-facing LEDs; side-printed or differently designed caps can behave differently.
  5. Check the complete keycap kit. Profile is only one issue. Layout, Enter and Shift sizes, and spacebar width must also fit. See our keycap ruler and ANSI vs ISO guide.

Which should you choose?

Choose north-facing if your priority is illuminating conventional top-positioned shine-through legends and you have verified compatibility with your intended keycaps.

Choose south-facing if you expect to swap among Cherry-profile keycap sets and want to reduce the risk of classic north-facing interference.

Neither orientation is automatically premium or budget. Both can be implemented well or poorly. Compare the actual keyboard’s construction and the parts you intend to use. For more on the underlying components, read switches and switch anatomy.

Frequently asked questions

Are south-facing LEDs better for Cherry-profile keycaps?

They generally avoid the classic north-facing housing-interference issue. Actual compatibility still depends on the keycap and switch dimensions.

Are north-facing LEDs brighter?

Not necessarily. They often illuminate top-positioned shine-through legends more directly, but overall brightness depends on LED output and the materials between the LED and legend.

Can I change a north-facing keyboard to south-facing?

Usually not by rotating the keycaps or changing a software setting. LED placement is a hardware characteristic of the PCB, and switch orientation and plate cutouts may also be involved.

Do south-facing LEDs work with RGB keycaps?

Yes. RGB effects and translucent keycaps can work with either orientation. The appearance and brightness of particular legends may differ.

Does LED orientation affect gaming latency?

No inherent latency difference follows from LED direction. Check independently measured performance data for the keyboard itself.
