An oil rather than a grease, which both shops say plainly, and which decides what it is for: it spreads on its own, reaches where a brush will not, and does not stay on a sliding surface. Springs are the job both listings agree on, with linears second. Thinner lubricant means less smooth, louder and more defined, so this is not a substitute for a grease on a stem.
